About cancer

Cancer is a malignant growth in a part of the body caused by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells.

  • Cancer may spread to other body parts through the lymphatic system or the blood stream.
  • Risk of developing cancer depends on three main factors: age, lifestyle and genetic makeup.
  • More than 40% of all cancers in the UK are linked to tobacco, alcohol, overweight, inactivity, infection, and radiation.
  • Smoking causes nearly a fifth of all cancers in the UK (including over 80% of lung cancers).
